ZIM UNDER 19 SEEK TO END LOSING STREAK

THE Zimbabwe Under-19 cricket team will be hoping to end a disappointing run of five consecutive defeats, when they take on Afghanistan in the second Youth One Day International (ODI) at the Greater Noida Stadium in India today. by SPORTS REPORTER

Afghanistan lead the four-match series 1-0, after registering a comfortable five wicket victory in the first match of the series on Sunday.

The defeat was the Zimbabwe Under-19’s fifth in as many matches after their 4-0 whitewash defeat to Bangladesh last month and coach Stephen Mangongo will be desperate for his charges to level the series.

On Sunday Afghanistan won the toss and elected to field first before proceeding to bowl out Zimbabwe for 198 runs in 46, 3 overs with wicketkeeper batsman Ryan Murray top scoring for the tourists with 47 runs.

The Afghan U-19 batsmen comfortably chased down the partly target in 41 overs for the loss of just five wickets, with Tariq Stanikzai top scoring 52 runs and while Rashid Arman managed 45 runs.

Spinner Zia-ur-Rehman was named man of the match for taking seven wickets in the match.

Zimbabwe are using the series against Afghanistan to prepare for the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) Under-19 Cricket World Cup scheduled for early next year.

Last week the team was drawn in Group C alongside England, West Indies and Fiji for the global youth tournament to be played in Bangladesh from January 27 to February 14.
