This week the Sunshine Tour returns to Humewood Golf Club in the windy Port Elizabeth for this season’s Sun Boardwalk Challenge to be held from 13 to 15 September.
The form player:
It is difficult to look beyond Jared Harvey when looking for a player who is on form going into this week. He has not missed a single cut in all 12 events he’s played this season, and he boasts four top-10 finishes plus a win at the Vodacom Origins of Golf Zimbali a fortnight ago. He tied for 10th spot at the Sun Fish River Sun Challenge last week and will go into this week full of confidence as the windy Port Elizabeth might bring weather conditions similar to Zimbali where he won so emphatically.
The defending champion:
Sun Boardwalk Sun Challenge: Three to watchLast year, Ruan de Smidt won this event at 13-under-par 203 after shooting rounds of 67, 67 and 69 to ward off Tyrone Ferreira who finished a stroke behind. That was his second Sun International tournament victory of the season as it followed the Sun Carnival City Challenge he had won two weeks before. With two top-10 finishes and four top-30s in the 12 events he’s played so far this season, and a four-time winner on the Sunshine Tour, De Smidt must be considered among players to watch come Wednesday.
The dark horse:
Sun Boardwalk Sun Challenge: Three to watch 1Sweden’s Jonathan Agren is looking for his first win on the Sunshine Tour and has looked impressive this season after he took a few months to go and enjoy summer at home. With only two missed cuts in the eight events he has played, Agren has not finished outside of the top-50 this season and boasts two top-10 finishes. He finished in a share of 10th last week at Fish River and came close a week before where he finished third at Zimbali. Currently occupying the 31st spot on the Order of Merit, the 28-year-old Swede has gone about his business quietly and will be hoping to bag his first win on Tour at Humewood.
The Sun Boardwalk Challenge is the fifth event in a series of six tournaments sponsored by Sun International with Peter Karmis, Jbe’ Kruger, Oliver Bekker and MJ Viljoen winning the first four in this season.
